This small black walnut box evokes a simple Japanese aesthetic. Every element has been carefully crafted by hand, from the precisely mitred corners—reinforced with keys—to the graceful chamfered lid that seems to float above the box. The keys had been cut and glued but still needed tidying. The lid required shaping and fitting, and the entire piece needed oiling.

The rich, deep tones of the black walnut grain feature a hard wax oil finish that protects while preserving the wood's natural feel. This finish lets the timber breathe while providing lasting protection, allowing a subtle patina to develop over time.

Following the Japanese principle of shibui, the box finds beauty in simplicity and refinement. Each joint and detail serves both beauty and function, creating perfect harmony between form and purpose. The hand-cut mitre joints, strengthened with precise key inlays, showcase traditional craftsmanship while ensuring the box will last for generations.
